If "evil" is associated with being unclean, we may become "evil" passively---by being in the presence of soil, dirt or that which is "evil"; unclean. If "evil" is associated with being unclean, we must keep away from us that which is unclean---lest we become unclean in its presence by it "rubbing off" upon us. If "evil" is associated with being unclean, we must keep away from people whom we regard as "evil", or possibly as being "evil". To play it safe, we should not take chances by associating with people who may be "evil". If we think of "good" in terms of being clean, we can be "good" passively; by keeping away from whatever is "evil"---if we have been "cleaned" initially. Once we have been "cleaned" initially we can continue to be "good" by keeping way from people, activities, places, ideas and other things which we regard as "evil". If we think of "good" and "evil" in terms of "clean" and "unclean" we are likely to become alienated from whatever and whomever we judge to be "evil" for whatever reason. Our judgements are bound to lead to alienation--- which are the true and real essence of evil. Evil has to do with being involved in alienative relationships---with being alienated from self, others and God. Love has to do with being involved openly and honestly in intimate relationships---with being reconciled with self, others and God. Love, not goodness, is what overcomes evil through reconciliation, open and honest dialogue, conflict resolution and peacemaking. Evil is not eliminated by washing, cleaning or purging. Evil is not minimized by seeking to avoid soil, dirt, pollution, etc. Evil is not eliminated by "good" people being "good", or rescuing "evil" people. If we think of "evil" in terms of being unclean; and "good" in terms of being clean---the consequence is likely to be the augmentation of alienative relationships, which are the roots of most of what we regard as evil.
