People live with fear in different ways--- doing different things with their fears. Some people are fearful of non-conformity and of alienation associated with not conforming to each other's expectations. They are usually fearful of creativity, change and growth. They become fixated upon fixed traditions, rituals, formula, rules, regulations, laws, and commandments. They are often mislead into ways of personal and communal disintegration. Other people are fearful of chaos, confusion and uncertainty. They sacrifice much in order to generate false appearances of order, certainty and of things being under control. They also are often mislead into ways of personal and communal disintegration. Yet other people are fearful of mistakes, errors, failures, tragedies and misfortune---and are unable to distinguish among them; and between them and challenges, crises and opportunities. Their fears block them from responding to crises, opportunities and challenges in creative ways which lead to the transcendence of chaos, confusion and uncertainty. They to are often mislead into ways of personal and communal disintegration. Then there are people who prudently fear the many forms of personal: ignorance, confusion, misunder- standings, alienation, estrangement, suspicion, dis- trust, and doubt --- which poison many personal relationships and kill many possibilities for human cooperation. They often discern the ways of personal and communal integration and joyfully lead others in such ways. It is prudent to discern not only the risks of unconventional behaviors, making mistakes, being wrong and lacking control---and to also discern the risks of RESPONDING to unconventional behaviors, mistakes and loss of control in ways which compound them; rather than reduce them. DISINTEGRATIVE RESPONSES to unconventional behaviors, mistakes and loss of control often lead to even more rebellion, confusion, and imprudent behavior. It is not helpful to call attention to unconventional behaviors, mistakes and loss of control in alienative ways which entail judgementalism, condemnations and alienation. No good comes from such identifications, judgements, condemnations and alienation. Truly good people do not engage in such patterns of response. It is essential that we respond to human imperfections in ways which lead to more open and honest human relationships within which people feel free and inclined to cooperate in ways which reduce the presence of human imperfections. Specializing in identifying and passing judgement upon human imperfections is rarely helpful. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
