We may also attribute integrity to relationships between individual persons and communities. Such attributions are not necessarily all of the very same kind. In what ways may such attributions differ, depending upon that which is said to have integrity? In what ways are such attributions alike, regardless of that which is said to have integrity? Let us consider the second questions first and then return to the first question. That which is said to have integrity: 1. Is whole, coherent, not fragmented. 2. Is not torn apart by continuing internal conflicts and violence. 3. Entails honesty, can be trusted. Differences arise because of differences in the nature of those realities which may be said to have integrity; especially whether that which is said to have integrity is an INDIVIDUAL or a COMMUNITY. INDIVIDUALS who are persons of integrity are concerned about the integrity of communities; including communities of which they are not members. COMMUNITIES that have integrity are concerned about the integrity of individuals; including individuals who are members of other communities. By virtue of size COMMUNITIES usually have more power to dominant most INDIVIDUALS, than most INDIVIDUALS have power to dominate COMMUNITIES. This asymmetry is a difference which affects the sense in which INDIVIDUALS and COMMUNITIES can be said to have integrity. In a similar way there are differences between how INDIVIDUALS AS INDIVIDUALS can be said to have integrity in contrast to how PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS between individuals can be said to have integrity. This situation is in some ways intermediate between that of INDIVIDUALS and COMMUNITIES. INDIVIDUALS who are persons of integrity are concerned about the integrity of personal relationships as relationships which transcend individuality; including the integrity of relationships between individual persons other than themselves. RELATIONSHIPS between individual persons are said to have integrity when they function as healthy wombs within which persons grow in personal integrity by virtue of the exchange of gifts of security enjoyed as the freedom to be safely vulnerable within a relationship of open and honest intimacy.
