Considering for how long true integrative instincts guided evolutionary behavior, we will do well to respect them excepting only in occasions where it is clear that changing environments and needs have rendered previous instincts dysfunctional. Let us focus primarily upon truly integrative instincts; i.e., those which entail honesty and tendencies to build/maintain personal and communal integrity. The following are suggestive of what they may include: 1. Hunger for nourishing healthy food. 2. Thirst for pure clean water. 3. Finding/making protective cloths/shelters. 4. Seeking supportive warmth and affection. 5. Finding/making order out of chaos. 6. Finding/making security in fellowships. 7. Learning from each other through dialogue. 8. Honestly describing our personal experiences. 9. Learning from our own/others' mistakes. 10. Seeking opportunities for vigorous exercise. 11. Seeking opportunities for rest/relaxation. 12. Seeking opportunities for affection/intimacy. 13. Seeking sexual relationships/stimulations. 14. Seeking sexual fulfillment and bonding. 15. Nurturing/caring-for/parenting children. 16. Letting go of situations we cannot control. When we are dealing with such truly integrative instincts each of the following is dysfunctional: 1. Pretending that they do not exist. 2. Pretending that they are other than they are. 3. Masking, hiding, repressing or suppression them. 4. Rationalizing/intellectualizing them dishonestly. 5. Blaming them for our disintegrative behaviors. 6. Refusing to recognize, name or describe them. 7. Refusing to talk about or deal with them. 8. Confusing them through collusive dishonest games. 9. Fearing them and running away from them. 10. Banishing them from communal contexts. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
