To maintain their communities, members of communities maintain their key myths; i.e., act in ways which affirm the myths. The essence of myths are often communicated by stories of human vision, visions, dreams, hopes, aspirations, bravery, courage, diligence, success, and failures. Such stories make clear to hearers what people have believed, valued, hoped for and sacrificially worked for. Myths provide the contexts within which people live meaningful lives with hope and meaning. Myths are not objective accounts of objective events at well known dates, times and places. Myths tell stories of human relationships and what those relationships have ment to participants, spectators and story-tellers. Myths are maintained by people who act in ways which affirm the importance of the myths and so sustain the stories which are central to the myths. It is not possible to verify that myths are true, any more than it is possible to prove that they are false. It is possible to verify that people regard a particular myth as important; or that they regard a particular myth as not important. Particular people may embody a myth by how they feel, think and act in the light of their assumptions and attitudes; and by what stories they tell with passion. Scientists embody a myth which pertains to knowledge, objectivity, and the power to be in control. Scientists tell stories about who discovered what law of nature and about who used what law of nature in order to control what objects and/or processes. The mathematical language and symbolic logic of science have been developed in order to tell the quantitative stories which are essential to the affirmation of scientists' myth. Scientists tell stories of quantitative relationships between elements which are objective parts of reality and subject to human controls. They are less prone to focus explicitly upon human relationships which are reflexive and transcend the possibilities of human control. Myths are non-objective realities which hold communities together. To maintain their communities members of communities maintain their key myths; i.e., act in ways which affirm the myths. To affirm their myth scientists deal with reality in terms of the constituent parts of reality; the quarks, elementary particles, nucleons, nuclei, atoms, molecules, DNA, cells, organs, organisms and communities which are basic parts of reality. Often scientists' myth leads them away from dealing with each other and their supporters as whole persons---and so into disintegrative analytic activities which they do not recognize as such---because of their collusive affirmations of their myth.
