Times of prayer and meditation are not properly times to be immersed in collusive and addictive influences---or to be faithful to their demands upon our time and attention. Times of prayer and meditation are not times for systematic procedures followed in conformal obedience to demands made upon us by some: institution, organization, doctrine, family, tribe, nation, school, profession, or group of "others". If prayer times are regarded as such times we are in the clutches of collusive and addictive influences and fix es---and need to create for ourselves times for true prayer and mediation. Times of prayer and mediation are times in which to seek honesty and integrity within our lives and those around us; and times in which to recognize dishonesty and disintegration within our lives and those around us. Times of prayer and mediation are not properly times of being busy; times of being engaged in doing---rather than times of truly being true to ourselves and others. Times of prayer and mediation are not properly times for seeking to accomplish goals, intentions and expectations---rather they are properly times for seeking to discern who is being honest, and who is not; who is enjoying personal and communal integrity, and who is not. In our times of prayer and meditation it is unwise to be preoccupied with other people's expectations and demands; or to fearfully anticipate their judgements, condemnations and excommunications. We need to let go of such burdens; and leave them by the side of the road to heaven. It is not helpful to camp by them and be preoccupied with such possessions---as if they were essential to our journey, or needed upon arrival at some destination. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
