Yet, many intelligent people are seemingly successful in rationalizing negativity. They are smart enough and diligent enough to make their obviously disintegrative life style seem to be rationale to people like themselves. The great feat of rationalization of negativity is accomplished through the playing of sophisticated games of mutual self deception. The games entail intricate patterns of dishonest cooperation and mutual self deception; i.e., collusions. The rationalizations are so difficult to achieve that it seems unreasonable to believe that anyone would seek to achieve them just to make a disintegrative life style to appear to be respectable. If one has started life within the context of people who are victims, and who have learned to cope with the challenges of being victims, there can be reasonable pride in rationalizing, making sense of, being victims. Once that rationalization skill has evolved to a high level the technical skill can seek new challenges. People who are not necessarily real victims can acquire the technical skill of rationalizing the condition of appearing to be victims---in the absence of real victimization. Then to demonstrate their skill they appear to be victims and seek to rationalize their appearance of being victims. If we are appear to be victims of a conspiracy against us by a lot of mean people, that appearance may be to us a sign of how important we are. If a lot of people are focusing a lot of attention upon us---we must be important, significant, and worthy of a lot of attention. We can get a high from believing that we merit all that negative attention. We can get a high by being clever enough to rationalize the appearance that so many people consider us important enough to spend their time victimizing us. In addition we can get a high by being clever enough to rationalize something so absurd; and make the whole process seem worthy of a high level of respect. In the end we judge our behavior as worthy of respect because we have made it appear respectable in spite of the fact that it is tragically disintegrative. That is why and how we come to our tragic end. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
