Seeking to fulfill contradictory conditions. Trying to appear like opposites. Trying to deny and affirm the same thing. Fearing and desiring the same thing. Dedicated to conflicting ideals/values/goals. Torn by conflicting desires/fears/needs. Trying to satisfy opposing demands/requirements. In each case pointed to above---there are unresolved conflicts within us, between us and others, between us and communal expectations, and/or between others in ways which involve us. Tension, contention and conflict sap us of energy which we might otherwise be able to direct to constructive efforts. Tension, contention and conflict---when they continue unresolved---promote confusion, chaos, dis-order and decay. In order to enjoy wholeness, integrity, peace, shalom and health we need to work in cooperative ways to resolve conflicts rather than to "win" conflicts. When people "win" conflicts---the losers perpetuate the conflicts in overt and covert ways. When people "win" conflicts---the losers have been shown that violence "pays" and they seek to follow the example of those who "won" the conflict; so conflict continues. Those who prevail in a war demonstrate that preparations for war "pay"---and so encourage future preparations for war by those who lost. Those who paid with their lives are honored by those who prevailed in the war; and such honor confuses the survivors regarding the integrity of war. Wars are demonstrations of the lack of integrity within and among the participants in wars. Wars perpetuate the lack of integrity within and among the participants in war; for they perpetuate the conflicts which occasion war. Wars demonstrate the lack of integrity in the ideals, values and goals which lead people into war---through the perpetuation of their conflicts. Addicts, codependent supporters and other participants in collusive games of mutual self deception work tacitly and overtly together to perpetuate the ideals, values and goals which lead people into war through the perpetuation of conflicts. They regard the resolution of conflicts as a violation of their ideals and values---and a sacrifice of their ultimate goals of successful domination. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
