People who do not have the required keys to communal acceptance, fellowship and respect---are outsiders. People without the required keys are not accepted as members of the community, and are rejected if they lose their keys. The keys to communal acceptance, fellowship and respect vary from community to community. The common keys may be pointed to by words such as: Achievements Knowledge Skills Beliefs Reputations Appearances Enthusiasm Energy Powers In differing communities the foci of what the above words point to will differ even though the nature of the keys may be similar, in keeping with the similarities in the words which point to the nature of the keys. People are often insecure and defensive in communities where it is implicit that a member will be rejected by the community if the member fails to keep their keys to their inclusion in the community "shiny", "up-to-date", and otherwise in keeping with changing standards. Membership in such a community is conditional. The conditions for continued membership may be continually changing in ways which are not clearly defined. A member who cannot figure out what the continually changing conditions for continued membership are---will not qualify for continued membership. Under such circumstances many members are likely to feel insecure, ill-at-ease, dis-eased, defensive, and prone to coercive manipulations and violence. The frustrations associated with membership in a conditional community are heightened if the community cannot and will not openly and honestly talk about the reasons for, and the consequences of, the conditions for continued membership in their community. It may be taboo to talk about reflexive realities and relationships. The members may be engaged in collusive games of mutual self deception. The community may be an addictive organization. In any such case the members of the community are unable to learn from their tragic mistakes, and are doomed to personal and communal disintegration as they try to maintain their membership in their dysfunctional community. The dilemma of communities in which the focus is upon keys to acceptance will not be transcended so long as the members of the community continue to focus upon keys to acceptance. The dilemma of the communities is not a technical problem pertaining to the choice of which keys to acceptance to focus upon---or how to maintain the proper keys to acceptance. The dilemma originates in the acceptance of the ideals, values and assumptions associated with accepting/rejecting people in terms of keys to acceptance. There is no technical solution to the dilemma, because the dilemma is not a technical problem. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
