We view criminals as personal objects which can be pushed around, manipulated, and controlled in much the same way we push impersonal objects around, manipulate impersonal objects, and control impersonal objects. In the light of our views and our attitudes towards criminals we often react and engage in manipulative behavior patterns which are echoes of the criminals' manipulative behavior patterns which alienated us from them, and them from us. We do not recognize criminals' behaviors as rooted in alienation, misunderstanding, poverty, ignorance, impotence, frustrations and lack of opportunity. Thus our responses to criminals' activities do not deal with the conditions which nurture criminals' activities. Criminals' activities are rooted in human relationships of alienation where conflicts fester un- resolved and un-transcended; yet we do not work much to help people develop human skills in conflict resolution. Criminals' activities are rooted in dysfunctional families where there is passive and active abuse of impressionable infants, children and adolescents; yet we organize our communities in ways which guarantee that children will be neglected and abused while their parents engage in financially profitable ventures. Criminals' activities are rooted in judgmental alienation; yet we nurture religious organizations which are committed to the refinement of rules and regulations which encourage judgements which are alienative. Criminals' activities are rooted in ignorance; yet we maintain attitudes towards human intimacy and sexuality which encourage ignorance regarding healthy intimacy and healthy sexual relationships. Criminals' activities are rooted in resentment towards being manipulated, coerced and violated; yet our response towards criminals' activity often involves the kinds of manipulation, coercion and violation which are characteristic of the criminals who have been trained to behave as they do by a dysfunctional family. Criminals' activities often involve patterns of addiction, codependence, and collusive games of mutual self deception; and so also do our responses to criminals' activities. We need to seek to understand each other and our criminals in ways which will enlighten us and our criminals regarding the roots of our criminals' activities; and will encourage us to deal with all that feeds the roots of our criminals' activities. We need a more honest and enlightened theory of what encourages young people to grow up and engage in criminal activities; so we can begin to deal with the roots of our criminals' activities, and spend less time fearing and reacting to our criminals.
