Which experiences and emotions are associated with alienation from self, others and God differ somewhat from culture to culture; and from subculture to subculture within any major culture. By its characteristics and processes each culture and subculture defines which experiences and emotions are sinful and which are not. Some of the definitions are essentially inherent in the nature of being finite humans, others are not and have to do with accidents of cultural diversity. Within any culture or subculture people may experience their own subculture's definitions of which experiences and emotions are sinful as if the definitions were objective realities; i.e., as if the human definitions transcended humanity in essential ways just as mountains, rivers, lakes, volcanoes, and oceans do. It it difficult to deal creatively with human definitions of which experiences and emotions are sinful if they are regarded as objective realities, when in reality they are reflexive realities and so are not objective realities. It is true that some experiences and emotions are more globally associated with alienation than are others. Alienation is almost always associated with: 1. Murder 2. Rape 3. Robbery 4. Violent Assault 5. Kidnapping 6. Terrorism 7. Threats 8. Insults 9. Humiliation 10. Ridicule There are other experiences and emotions which are locally associated with alienation, depending upon the characteristics of local subcultures. Those experiences and emotions which are only locally associated with alienation often have to do with the showing of disrespect for local collusive games of mutual self deception. Such alienation is associated with unresolved conflicts between conflicting ideals and values. They often involve alienation between (1) Those people who continue to try to faithfully play dishonest games of mutual self deception, and (2) Those people who are dedicated to charitable honesty, to promoting personal and communal integrity. Such alienation has been associated with conflicts relating to: 1. Slavery 2. Male dominance 3. Idol worship 4. Racial discrimination 5. Ethnic discrimination 6. Doctrinal differences 7. Sexual life styles 8. Intimate relationships 9. Impossible dreams 10. Honest expressions 11. Artistic expressions 12. Freedoms of expression 13. Authority structures 14. Issues of control 15. Uses of techniques 16. Ideals and Values 17. Religious freedom 18. Sexual freedom Here the boundary between what appears to transcend human reality and what is essentially a function of human conventions is often not at all clear. The closer one examines the boundary the less clear the boundary is in exceptional cases. Tragedies often flow from compulsively pretending that human conventions and traditions are expressions of objective reality rather than reflexive human realities which humans can change through open and honest dialogue which transcends collusive games of mutual self deception.
