How we spend our time declares our values, ideals and priorities. We cannot spend our time in a value-neutral way. Scientists who strive to be value- neutral declare their values, ideals and priorities by spending their time doing research, writing papers and attending research conferences---at the expense of other possibilities. When our lives are not satisfying, meaningful and joyful we will do well to consider how we spend our time; with what foci of attention, passions, emotions, conversation, thinking, work, relationships, writing and reading. If our lives are not satisfying, meaningful and joyful we will do well to consider giving up some of the ways we spend our time in order to give time to new ways. We are not likely to do this unless we passionately come to feel that the status quo is unacceptable and it is worth making significant sacrifices to change our status quo. We will not act to change our behavior as regards how we spend our time unless we deeply feel that the fruits of our behavior patterns are unacceptable, and we recognize what is unacceptable as being in fact the fruit of our own behavior patterns. Often our lives are not satisfying, meaningful and joyful because they are focused exclusively upon non- existential ideals, values, abstractions, rules, regulations, prohibitions, injunctions, and taboos. When we become split from our experiences we cannot relate meaningfully and in satisfying ways to each other. Hearing someone in person openly and honestly tell of their first person experiences is often more beneficial to us than hearing a scientifically reliable objective report of research regarding many people having such experiences; and will more likely lead to a prudent change in how we spend our time than will the scientifically reliable objective report.
