In a court of law appointed the task of deciding on guilt or innocence the accusers must prove beyond reasonable doubt that some specific legitimately enacted law has been violated by the accused. The judges are to begin with strong doubt about guilt, and shift to belief in guilt only upon strong evidence thereof---in regards to some specific law clearly articulated. Circumstantial evidence is not to be taken seriously in the absence of more convincing evidence. In personal decisions as to whether to respect and/or support an intimate relationship doubt is an appropriate beginning, and circumstantial evidence is appropriate grounds for shifting to respect and support even in the absence of more convincing evidence. In personal decisions as to whether to respect an intimate relationships attention is appropriately given to: 1. An evident commitment to honesty in the relationship. 2. A pattern of gentleness, charity, forgiveness, tenderness, respect, balance. 3. Efforts to promote both personal and communal integrity in balanced ways. 4. A prudent willingness to be generous in helping others take good care of themselves. 5. A tendency towards inclusive relationships rather than towards exclusive relationships. 6. Evidence of seeking to promote open and honest dialogue, talk, conversations, listening---with significantly differing peoples. 7. Work towards honest conflict resolution in which all participants win advantages in conflict resolution. 8. Tolerance and respect for creative differences. 9. Work to transcend collusions, addictions and codependent relationships. 10. Efforts to understand and sympathize with enemies. In the presence of such circumstantial evidence it is reasonable and proper to assume that private aspects of a relationships are integrative, rather than disintegrative; gentle rather than violent. In no instance should the mere suggestion that a relationships is improper be grounds for judging it to be improper until proven otherwise. When it comes to making judgements and moving towards punishment, innocence is to be assumed until guilt is proven with far more than circumstantial evidence. The assumption of innocence does not, however, require personal respect for and/or support of a relationship about which little is known. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
