Taboos are ineffective tools of manipulation because the victims of taboo manipulations are often depressed and looking for the excitement and stimulation which they otherwise lack. Given their situation, the excitement engendered by the challenge of secretly violating taboos is a pleasant prospect---in spite of the real and fantasized risks. Taboo manipulators do not know of nor understand the motivations which drive and lead those who are depressed by taboo manipulations. Taboos often originate in reasonable concerns; but taboo manipulations do not honestly address the concerns. Taboo manipulators are persons of addictive attitudes, perspectives, beliefs and understandings. They approach non-conformists as challenges to their power to promote conformity through: coercion, threats, control technologies, and violence. Where there is non-conformity they believe there is a need for laws, law enforcement, legislation, litigation, lawyers, courts, jails, rejection, estrangement, excommunication, and capitol punishment. Because they are not honestly reflexive people, they do not see that their technologies do not live up to their promises and expectations. Technologies of human control do not work. Honesty regarding this fact of life is essential to personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
