Coercive conformity is not healthy, and healthy people naturally rebel against coercive pressures to conform. Behavior may conform to expectations because expectations are based upon the presence of a healthy situation in which people are free to do what is good for them; and they wisely exercise their freedom. Such conformity is not coercive. Behavior may not conform to expectations because expectations do not take into account the absence of a healthy situation and the reality that people are not free to do what is good for them. In such situations people often exercise what freedom they have in the form of rebellion against pressures to conform. A coercive pressure to conform is unhealthy even if the standards to which one is expected to conform would be reasonable standards of expectation in a healthy situation. However, the existence of coercive pressures to conform eliminates the possibility of a healthy situation in which conformity to the standards would be wise. Conformity to coercive standards of conformity is not wise if yielding to the standards undermines personal and/or communal integrity; e.g., by engendering dishonesty. Coercive pressures to conform invite and encourage dishonesty. Even if it appears that people are conforming very well, personal and communal disintegration are likely to be present through the processes of growing dishonesty about hidden thoughts, feelings, and desires. Thus conformity to good standards of behavior may go hand in hand with the processes of personal and communal disintegration; if the conformity takes place in a coercive context. Dishonest conformity is disintegrative. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
