For an observer to be objective requires that the observer draw back from the object of the observation, and be detached from the object of the observation. The participant in a personal relationship cannot be detached from the relationship within which the observer is presently involved. Thus objectivity about a present personal relationship is impossible in the sense of objectivity about objects which are "obeying" objective scientific laws of process. The objective paradigms of scientists do not provide open and honest guidance to scientists who are trying to be objective---about ways to cooperate and to participate in effective science education programs; for effective cooperation and education entail involvement in personal relationships. To the extent that scientists look to their objective paradigms for guidance in how to cooperate and how to participate in science education programs---they are mislead. To the extent that scientist think and behave as if their objective paradigms serve them well in providing guidance in how to cooperate and how to participate in science education programs---they are participants in collusive games of mutual self deception which are highly reflexive/non-objective personal processes. Cooperation and education both entail educement; the drawing out of people through conversation and dialogue which is reflexive. Neither cooperation nor educement is an objective process whereby an actor acts upon objects in an objective way and observes in a detached way how the objects behave in objective relationships. To participate significantly and meaningfully in scientific cooperation and education means to be involved in conversations which may convert the participants; in dialogue which may change the participants. If the assumption is that the participant scientists are not going to be changed through the process, then the stage is set for collusive games of mutual self deception. How can "objective observers" learn anything from their observations if they are not changed by their observations? To learn is to change, to be changed by the process of observation. The concept of the objective observer is in some sense an oxymoron, and those people who believe in the concept are not well informed. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
