They censor their experiences if their experiences do not conform to their logic, reason, systematics, and doctrine. Thus they maintain their convictions even when their convictions are disintegrative of persons and communities. It is risky for people to fail to be true to themselves and to each other about what their own personal experiences are. Dishonesty, deception, inattention, neglect, ignorance and secrecy regarding what one's own personal experiences are---can lead to personal and communal disintegration. No system of logic, reason, doctrines, convictions, beliefs, religious teachings, scientific truths, etc. is great enough to be worth paying the price of dishonesty, deception, inattention, neglect, ignorance and secrecy regarding what one's own personal experiences are. Personal and communal integrity can be maintained only so long as there is continual honesty, openness, dialogue, conversation, and attention to the relationships between one's most dearly held logic, reason, systematics and doctrines on the one hand; and one's most basic personal experiences, fears, hopes, anxieties, expectations, tensions, conflicts, etc.---shared with others who are different than oneself. If we talk only with those who are like us, we are likely to be trapped in the same systematic pattern of unrecognized mistakes. It is those who are different from us, who are most able to help us to recognize our mistakes. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
