The individual dots of color taken one at a time convey no overall impression, no particular message. The message is to be found in the pattern of inter- relationships among all the colored dots. So also it is with pictures in newspapers, on television screens, and photographs. Looked at closely enough each picture becomes a pattern of dots. It is the patterns of inter- relationships among the dots which convey the image, picture, impression; and so the message. In human relationships and communities there are many images, pictures, impressions and messages---which are conveyed by the overall patterns of individual events, tones of voice, postures, facial expressions, manners of movement, actions omitted, things not said, expectations, fears, anticipations, attitudes, emotions, etc. The elements which make up the whole are not clearly identified objective realities existing apart from the viewers of them. The more closely anybody looks at the elements as separate objective realities; the less objective and real they are in the overall pattern of human relationships and communities. Their reality is embedded in the pattern of which they are a part in the human relationships and communities. Children growing up in any family become aware of the overall patterns of relationships and communities; more so than of the objective individual events, tones of voice, postures, facial expressions, manners of movement, actions omitted, things not said, expectations, fears, anticipations, attitudes, emotions, etc. It is the human meanings of the patterns which are important to children. Does the child's context offer security, hope, support, affection, freedom, joy, pleasure, etc? No thoroughly objective analysis of the individual elements of the human relationships and community will yield meaningful responses to such questions. The overall patterns need to be responded to in wholistic ways in order for there to be meaningful responses to such questions; and in order for there to be healing of unhealthy relationships, communities, and disintegrative patterns within them.
