If we do not talk about the general emotional tone and pattern of our lives, or do not talk about the particular emotions which we associate with particular activities and situations---then we may be unaware that other people live with different general emotional tones and patters in their lives than do we. We may in isolation think and feel that our general emotional tone and/or particular emotions are inevitably associated with life in general, and/or with the particular activities and situations---in the same way for everybody; when in fact they are not. In our emotional ignorance we are bound to misunderstand each other's responses which are rooted in different emotional tones, patterns, and responses. In a compulsively objective community where reflexive considerations are repressed, the level of ignorance is likely to mirror the absence of emotional open and honest discussion of emotional experiences. The following aspects of our lives depend profoundly upon the general emotional tone and pattern of our lives, and upon the particular emotions which we associate with particular activities and situations: (1) How we regard each other; with affection, suspicion, trust, fear, sympathy, resentment, appreciation, anger---or in other ways. (2) How well we understand each other. (3) How well we cooperate with each other. (4) How successfully we resolve our conflicts. (5) How we perpetuate our traditional conflicts. (6) How we use and abuse each other. (7) What we learn, when, and where. (8) How we learn, and how we forget. (9) Our general view of the nature of the universe. (10) Our views of human relationships. (11) How we respond to new situations and change. (12) How we respond to risks and threats. (13) Our level of creativity or lethargy. Considering all that depends upon how well we know, understand, and talk about the general emotional tone and pattern of our lives; and the particular emotions which we associate with particular activities and situations: it is tragic that little open and honest attention is focused upon these dimensions of our lives, and upon how they connect to all aspects of our lives. But then, of course, we could not keep and maintain our collusions and addictions---if we did focus attention upon our emotional lives. We must keep and maintain our collusions and addictions! No wonder we do not wonder about our inability to cope well and with integrity with our dilemmas and technical problems. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
