People who were winners, "on-top" and "in-power" according to old- paradigms often resist integrative paradigm-shifts. Old-paradigm winners want to keep the old rules and resist creative efforts of new-paradigm people to shift the paradigm from a disintegrative-paradigm to an integrative-paradigm. Old-paradigm winners want arguments fought out according to the rules under which they have often won arguments. Old-paradigm victors in conflicts want conflicts settled according to the rules under which they have been victors, and other people have been vanquished. A paradigm-shift threatens the false sense of security of old-paradigm victors, and they in mis-guided "self-interest" seek to prevent the transcendence of their old-paradigm when they are confronted with the possibility of an integrative paradigm-shift. New-paradigm people who are seeking to shift human relationships to creative integration of peoples and communities; need to be sensitive to and understand the thought patterns and attitudes of conservative people who want to conserve the old-paradigm within which they have achieved such power, respect, recognition and self-esteem as they cling to. They need to be sensitive to the manipulative techniques which such people are bound to use in protecting their old paradigm against an integrative paradigm-shift; from a disintegrative-paradigm to a truly integrative-paradigm. They need to be sensitive to the old-paradigm people as persons who are imprisoned by their old successes and by the means through which they achieved their old successes. Paradigm-shifts often have to do with whether there will be people, or with which people will be "on top" and "on the bottom". Old-paradigm people who are accustomed to being "on top" regard being "on top" to be the only alternative to being "on the bottom", and so they resist any paradigm-shift which would deprive them of the privilege of being "on top"; resisting therefor any integrative paradigm-shift which would eliminate respect for the categories "on top" and "on the bottom". They resist any integrative paradigm-shift in which all people would learn to "GET TO YES" together through cooperative efforts in open and honest dialogue. They resist true conflict resolution, and seek to win conflicts at the expense of others. Thus they work in ways which perpetuate conflicts, violence, and the violation of personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
