There are many occasions in which we seek to defend our selves or loved ones against another person who may yield to the temptation just indicated. The quality of our personal and communal lives depends critically upon how we respond to our own temptations, and how we respond to the possibilities inherent in how other people respond to their temptations; perhaps with disintegrative consequences. The quality of our personal and communal lives further depends critically upon how we regard ourselves and each other because of our/their responses to the temptations and perceived threats to integrity. Our responses may be legalistic, moralistic, systematic, technocratic, manipulative, coercive, etc; or they may be rooted in the prompting of what Love has written in our hearts and instincts within the contexts of integrative families and communities. Our view of our responses will be similarly rooted. Often legalistic, moralistic, systematic, technocratic, manipulative, coercive, etc. kinds of responses lead tragically to disintegration. Following the promptings of what Love has written in our hearts and instincts more often leads to integrative fruits which come without guarantees. Our views of these outcomes reflect the attitudes which lead to the outcomes. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
