Children need to learn how wisely to regard people who refuse to admit to and to learn from their own and other people's mistakes. It is dangerous to grant respect to people who refuse to acknowledge their own mistakes and to profit from them. The society which fails to teach its children to regard such people with apprehension, is bound in time to be the victim of such dangerous people. The status quo of today is inadequate to the inevitably changed circumstances of tomorrow. It is a mistake to thoughtlessly maintain patterns of behavior from one year to the next without change. Each community must promote wise change, or fall victim of the mistakes implicit in maintaining inappropriate patterns. Each community must promote the withholding of respect from members of the community who fail to recognize, admit to and learn from mistakes made. Children must be taught by role modeling, theory, and practice how to recognize such fools, and to help such fools to become more honest by proving them with contexts in which they may feel secure in admitting to their own mistakes, so that they and others can learn from mistakes made. To learn from their mistakes members of a community need t detach from perfectionists' ideals and detach from according respect to the appearance of perfection. Respect should be accorded to people who learn from mistakes, not to those people who appear not to have made mistakes. There should be appropriate skepticism about people who appear never to make mistakes, for such appearances are most likely dishonest impressions, designed to satisfy perfectionists who are dangerous people to have around. To maintain communal and personal integrity each community must develop and constantly update an adequate theory of how to promote wise change through learning from the mistakes made by its members; changing the theory in the light of experience which is openly and honestly talked about, in reflexive contexts which encourage people to recognize changes which need to be made in how they view themselves and each other. In the absence of such wise, efforts there is likely to be a progressive degeneration into the consequences of collusions, addictions and codependent support of people making the mistake of pretending not to make mistakes. An adequate theory of promoting wise change and an adequate educational program which incorporates such a theory, must include consideration of the dynamics of processes which will tend to generate confusion, opposition, forgetfulness, deception, repression, and subversion; with respect to what the theory and the educational program offers. Each new generation needs encouragement in sustaining such a meta-theory, and such a meta-educational program. Each parent, teacher, professor, religious leader and administrator has a responsibility to provide such encouragement. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
