Their behavior is not determined by a system of rules, and so their behavior is not predictable and cannot be controlled. People with integrity do not react to stimuli according to a systematic prescription; e.g., according to rules, regulations, requirements, expectations, etc. Because they do not react with predictable regularity, they cannot be manipulated through the careful choice of stimuli. That which is essentially mysterious defies complete analysis and prediction; and does not yield to reductionistic analysis or conform to expectations. The mystery of integrity is not the mystery of ignorance. The mystery of ignorance is dispelled through the acquitting of missing knowledge. The mystery of integrity is not dispelled regardless of how much knowledge is acquired, because its essence is not ignorance. Because integrity involves essential mystery it cannot be prescribed. People cannot achieve integrity by any form of conformity; so all calls for conformity will fail to lead the way to personal or communal integrity. People cannot achieve integrity by conforming to some prescription. People and communities cannot achieve integrity by conforming themselves to some specifications which have come into existence without regard for the unique beings and circumstances of the people themselves. Conformity to specifications which are indifferent to one's own true nature does not lead to personal or communal integrity. Because every person is unique, there can be no reliable prescription as to the road to personal and communal integrity, even though some comments may be made regarding the nature of the way, and some signs may be given which will suggest when the way has been lost.
