Accurate description is often equated with understanding; but often it is not understood that the kind of understanding which scientists specialize in is primarily the understanding of analysis and description, not the understanding which is characterized by sympathy, empathy and affective participation. The scientists' paradigm leads to analytic & descriptive understanding based upon impersonal manipulations of those things which are taken apart, reconstructed, manipulated, and controlled. The scientists' paradigm offers great power to make things conform to the preconceptions, desires, and goals of the scientists; but only within certain limitations. Scientists cannot make objects behave in any way they please. There are patterns in the ways in which impersonal objects behave; patterns which scientists call the laws of nature. The laws of nature and the grand theories which describe how the laws relate to each other, all describe the limitations which exist upon scientists' power to manipulate and control. All manipulations and attempts to be in control fail when they attempt to get objects to behave in ways which are not in keeping with the patterns described by the laws of nature, and not in keeping with the theories which describe how those laws relate to each other. The laws of nature and the theories describing the inter-connections between the laws of nature pertain only to impersonal objects and their relationships, because the paradigm of the scientists focuses their interests only upon impersonal objects and their relationships. Their paradigm imposes limitations upon the ways in which scientists may approach reality, and so imposes limitations upon the kinds of understandings which scientists may enjoy. The scientists' paradigm does not offer helpful guidance when it comes to dealing with personal failures, embarrassment, frustrations, fears, hopes, aspirations, priorities, ideals and values. These realities are outside the range of what the scientists' paradigm pertains to. Not only does the scientists' paradigm not offer helpful guidance with regard to the above kinds of realities; it offers misleading guidance, leading scientists into tragic efforts to be in control of such personal realities through efforts to understand, predict and control such realities in keeping with their objective and analytically dominated paradigm. Their efforts to describe such realities from within their impersonal paradigm are tragically mislead by the impersonal paradigm towards personal and communal disintegration; as in arms races and the threat and reality of modern war using the fruits of scientist' clever creativity. Citizens who are not truly educated in the tradition of the liberal arts are likely to respect scientists' paradigm within personal contexts where scientists' impersonal paradigm does not merit respect. Such citizens are likely to seek technical fixes for personal dilemmas and become participants in addictive, codependent and collusive games of mutual self deception; trying to be in full control of personal realities in the same way in which scientists' and their technocratic admirers manage to be in partial control of some aspects of impersonal realities. Their efforts are tragically disintegrative, for the scientists' paradigm was not designed to promote personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
