The scientific paradigm discourages reflexive considerations which are essential to wise behavior pertaining to human desires, emotions, affection and personal relationships. The scientific paradigm is compulsively concerned with understanding, predicting and controlling impersonal things. When that compulsion is focused upon human desires, emotions, affections and personal relationships, the result is tragic in the classical Greek sense---good intentions, profound commitment and sacrificial efforts lead to terrible consequences. Human desires, emotions, affections and reflexive relationships in general cannot be controlled, managed, predicted and administered in the manner than impersonal things and objective relationships can be. Not even our own personal desires, emotions and feelings are controllable, manageable, predictable or administrable in the manner in which objects and objective relationships can be. The scientific paradigm leads to dishonest addictive patterns of thought, feeling, emotions and behavior when it is used within the context of reflexive realities and relationships. It is dishonest to pretend otherwise by what is said and not said, by what is done and not done. Scientists and technocrats who pretend to be able to avoid non-objective relationships as they compulsively focus upon objective things; are in fact engaged in the non-objective setting of priorities, the spending of limited resources, the making of commitments to spend limited time and energy, and in leading students and others to do likewise; all in keeping with the non- objective ideals, values and goals of the scientific paradigm. Such pretense is dishonest and so is disintegrative of personal and communal integrity. It is essentially dishonest to promote the ideal of always being objective; for the ideal is itself non-objective in nature. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
