Tragedies are the result of non-technical errors. Tragedies cannot be avoided by avoiding technical errors. Tragedies occur even when there have been no technical errors, lacks, mistakes, failures, etc. Tragedies can occur in the face of technical perfection. Greater devotion to technical perfection and a willingness to make greater sacrifices of time, resources and materials are of no avail in efforts to avoid tragedies; for tragedies flow from non-technical mistakes in becoming dedicated to misleading ideals, values, attitudes, goals, myths, gods, etc. To deal creatively with tragedies we must admit to the possibility that we may have made tragic non-technical errors/mistakes in becoming dedicated to misleading ideals, values, attitudes, goals, myths, gods, etc. If we pretend that it is impossible for us to have made such errors/mistakes; within the process of developing that pretense we have set the trap which will play a central role in future tragedies. The trap will prevent us from seeing both the trap and how the trap will lead to repeated tragedies with which we will unable to cope creatively. The pretense that we can avoid tragedies through technical procedures is part of the collusive games of mutual self deception which characterize technocratic and addictive communities as they disintegrate. Civilizations rise as they honestly seek balanced personal and communal integrity. Civilizations fall as they dishonestly seek unbalanced personal and communal gain and unfair advantage. The rise and fall of civilizations pertain to the rise and fall of balanced personal and communal integrity; and to the value which members of the civilizations place upon such balance as they engage in the technical procedures of everyday life.
