Only with the support of an integrative social context are the prisoners of such disintegrative taboos really set free. Rebellion is ineffective. Lectures are ineffective. Verbal statements in the absence of affective support are ineffective. Affectively honest demonstrations of true freedom from the power of disintegrative taboos are demonstrations which are effective in offering freedom from such taboos to those not yet free of collusive taboos which lead to disintegration. Yet, to be effective the freedom which is offered through such honest demonstrations must also be accepted. Such freedom cannot be unilaterally given and be effective. Such freedom must be freely offered and also freely accepted to be effective. Transcendence of disintegrative taboos occurs within contexts which provide a basis for focusing attention upon interests other than the taboos. Disintegrative taboos are not transcended by focusing attention upon them in efforts to stop being preoccupied with them. Transcendence and freedom come with the shifting of attention to more important matters within social and intellectual contexts which provide a basis for affirming the greater importance of the new foci of attention. New foci of attention may provide ways of understanding the dynamics of the processes through which collusive taboos lead to personal and social disintegration. Such new foci provide alternative ways of concentrating attention more creatively than do the ways which demonstrate preoccupation with collusive and dishonest taboos.
