Thus, ultimate concerns have to do with pattern recognition, and with meaningful responses to recognized patterns. Some patterns of behavior, situations, relationships, concepts, feelings, attitudes, belief, expectations, aspiration, conviction, communication, etc. represent disintegrative threats; others represent integrative opportunities. Ultimate questions pertain to recognizing which is which, and pertain to responding appropriately to such recognitions. Integrative and disintegrative patterns may be recognized within self, within others; within relationships among others, and within relationships between self and others. If they are not recognized for what they are, it is impossible to respond appropriately to them. The essence of education is educing the ability to recognize patterns for what they are, and to respond to diverse patterns in appropriate ways which promote the integrity of self and others. Naive and simplistic approaches to life fail because they focus upon incomplete elements of patterns rather than upon complete patterns. We cannot cope effectively if we see elements of patterns as evil and try to eliminate evil elements; as if the essence of evil somehow resided within the essence of such incomplete elements. It is helpful to recognize that ultimate threats to personal and communal integrity reside in the quality of various patterns; for some patterns of behavior, situations, relationships, concepts, feelings, attitudes, belief, expectations, aspiration, conviction, communication, etc. represent disintegrative threats; others represent integrative opportunities. Ultimate questions pertain to recognizing which is which, and pertain to responding appropriately to such recognitions. Integrative and disintegrative patterns may be recognized within self, within others; within relationships among others, and within relationships between self and others. If they are not recognized for what they are, it is impossible to respond appropriately. Real threats to personal integrity involve patterns of relationships which involve self; thus it is impossible to eliminate such threats to self by eliminating all participants in threatening patterns. Evil is not an external reality and cannot be eliminated by eliminating external realities. Evil is real. The question is: where is evil real; where does it reside, where is it? When one person or group makes the judgement that another person or group is evil and rejectable; there is real evil present in the relationship between the judge(s) and the victim(s) of the judgement. The victim(s) include the judge(s); for the reality of evil resides more in the quality of the inter-personal relationships which are in question, than in individual persons or groups. To eliminate evil we must learn to resolve inter-personal and inter-group conflicts which separate us into mutually judgmental/rejective camps which are willing to engage in ultimately disintegrative wars to defend the positions of our respective camps. In the absence of reconciliation there is no elimination of evil; there is just destruction of healthy relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
