If all members of the community were plumbers and refused to do anything but plumbing, there would be a real problem. Likewise there would be a real problem if all members of a community regarded plumbing as beneath them. For a community to have integrity it must have a variety of different kinds of wise people in it, and the many different kinds of people must respect what each other contributes to the integrity of the whole community. What is true of a community and its members is also true within a person, and the large number of different complementary aspects of a person of integrity. If a person is compulsively logical at every moment of their life and utterly disdainful towards the emotional and affective aspects of life, the person lacks integrity; is not healthy and is not whole---because the person lacks essential aspects of being a whole person. To have integrity a person must respect all essential aspects of being a whole person, and of being be a member of a community which likewise respects all essential aspects of being a whole person. Insecure people often seek to achieve security by trying to achieve perfection with regard to some specialized aspect of being a whole person; regarding other aspects as of little importance and as inferior to the aspect that they seek to perfect. They adopt an exclusive attitude towards what merits respect in a person, and they regard themselves as better than other people because they have specialized in the best possible character of being a whole person. In their exclusivity they exclude from their lives aspects which are essential to personal integrity---as they specialize in attempts to achieve some narrow type of perfection, to justify themselves and to compensate for their lack of affective acceptance, and lack of healthy self esteem.
