To moral legalists there are only two kinds of people; acceptable people, and rejectable people. Good people should reject all rejectable people as part of the process of being good people. Not only is it permissible to reject rejectable people, they should be rejected. Alienation is an essential tool in the tool kit of manipulative techniques of moral legalists. Through alienation control is to be achieved. People who are controlled by the proper set of rules are good and acceptable people. People who are not controlled by the proper set of rules are evil and rejectable people. To moral legalists personal acceptability and rejectability are determined in a simple way, by whether or not a person is willingly controlled by the proper set of do's and don'ts. The more addicted a self-righteous moral legalist is, the simpler life appears to be; the easier it is to identify and reject evil people in futile efforts to control their behavior. Moral legalists are thus alienated from people who are different from them in any significant way. Moral legalists are not honest with themselves or others about the consequences of their pattern of accepting and rejecting people. They pretend that the consequence is good control of behavior; and ignore all the confusion, alienation, rebellion, ignorance, and manipulative violence which it leads to. Moral legalists are not interested in personal and communal integrity which is encouraged through open and honest dialogue regarding past, present and future decisions and personal experiences. They are addicted to rules by which one may systematically sort people into two categories; good and evil. Moral legalists do not have enough self confidence to deal with the ambiguities, paradoxes and mysteries of real living. They are the product of their own logic. Having been rejected often, they lack self esteem, and do not know the security which Love gives through non- manipulative personal acceptance. Love does not accept people into dialogue according to whether or not they are controlled by some particular set of rules. Love does not reject people from dialogue if they are not controlled by some particular set of rules. Love's acceptance is not the manipulative acceptance which is the flip side of the coin of manipulative rejection. Love's acceptance is a different kind of acceptance which is not part of an addictive effort to be in control. Love does not set up dichotomies of good and evil, acceptable and rejectable, heaven and hell. It is moral legalists who set up such dichotomies, and then live and die within the hell which they created and worship in idolatrous ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
