Central to the health of community is the integrity of the communal procedures for promoting good health and for dealing with the breakdown of health. It is essential that members of the community be responsible for as much of their own health care as can be arranged; else they become overly dependent specialized upon professionals who then lack motivation to promote good health in their patients who pay most when they are sick most. Such a relationship of dependency upon health providers is an unhealthy relationship and it undermines the health of the community. When the income of health care providers depends upon people being sick and in need of health care, the system is bound to become corrupted and expensive. The health of a community depends critically upon the health of the relationships among the members of the community. Dishonest relationships undermine health. Relationships characterized by compulsive dependence and assistance undermine health. Coercive relationships undermine health, even if they are mutually coercive. Personal relationships focused upon personal control are unhealthy, even if they are idealistic in orientation. Pretentious relationships which do not deal realistically with personal limitations are unhealthy. Extravagant and exclusive relationships which squander limited human and natural resources are unjust and so unhealthy. Bodily health usually mirrors the quality of interpersonal relationships among the members of a community. It is helpful to give consideration to institutional relationships as well as to individual personal relationships. A community can be unhealthy because of systemic institutional relationships which can not be controlled through individual efforts; but can be influenced by cooperative communal efforts. It is unhealthy for members of a community to ignore the role which systemic institutional relationships play in setting the stage for personal health or disease. Banks which red-line residential neighborhoods undermine health. Corrupt political leadership undermines communal health. Segregated schooling undermines communal health. Systematically biased news reporting undermines communal health. Religious excommunications undermine communal health. Violations of communication rights undermine communal health even when they are done in the name of law and order. Military training to despise the enemy undermines communal health. Preparations for war undermine communal health. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
