In the absence of public descriptions and recognitions of the costs of alienation, a community is most likely to suffer such costs in ignorance of what they are; and of what patterns of behavior lead to incurring such costs. It is a mistake to remain ignorant of the costs of alienative patterns of behavior. Those who truly seek to discover what those costs are can discover them, describe them publicly, and help to bring about public recognition of the disintegrative costs of alienative patterns of behavior. The keys to the discovery of the costs of alienative patterns of behavior is a desire to discover the costs, and a dedication to the promotion of secure contexts for open and honest dialogue about people's own experiences, feelings, convictions, etc. Alienative patterns of behavior are rooted in manipulative habits of mind/heart which are supported by paradigms dedicated to achieving perfection, control, acceptability, power and security. The consequences are that alienative patterns of behavior tragically lead to the opposite of the intended goals. It is important to the integrity of a community and its members that the costs of alienation be described and recognized in public ceremonies. If the members of a community do not recognize the consequences of perpetuating alienative habits of mind/heart they cannot learn from their mistakes, and are doomed to repeat the mistakes over and over and over. Alienation is occasioned by: personal rejections, personal manipulations, over-specialization, exclusivity, shunning, punishment, pride without humility, collusive games of mutual self deception, addictions and codependents' support of addicts, etc. Each such habit of mind/heart has its own disintegrative dynamics which need to be recognized and described for public considerations. In the light of such open and honest descriptions it is possible to avoid the consequences of much alienation. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
