The humble person does not pretend to be less or more than they really are. The humble person accepts their own unchangeable characteristics and wisely works with them in an open and honest way. The humble person has no problem with learning from their own mistakes. People who engage in pretense have difficulty profiting from their own mistakes; they try to appear to be different than they really are. Few pretentious people are able to acknowledge their own mistakes even to themselves, and so they cannot learn from their own mistakes. They pretend to be perfect and cannot deal with their own imperfections. Thus they are imprisoned by their imperfections, rather than free to work creatively within the context which their imperfections create. Some pretentious people pretend to lack abilities, skill and knowledge which they really have. They are not free to make the contributions which they might otherwise make. They pretend to be humble with false modesty which imprisons them in a role to which they are not well suited. Appearing to be incompetent is not the essence of humility. The humble person is free to appear to be competent if that is what they really are. The competent person who is humble feels no need to use their competence as a club with which to put other people down. The competent person who is humble does not lack self esteem and does not try to achieve a high level of self esteem by putting others down with parades of competence. The competent person who is humble honesty places their competence in the humble service of others who can accept such service honestly. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
