The role of an educator who seeks to teach students is to constructively lead and influence students' behavior. If the students' behavior is coerced and resentful, there will be learning naturally associated with coercion and resentment. If the teacher tries to control students' behavior, the lessons taught will have to do with resisting control. If the teacher does not lead effectively, students will not behave in ways which promote appropriate learning. The issue of educational control relates to addictive, codependent and collusive behaviors in a community. When efforts to be in control and to avoid being controlled dominate in the educational setting, there is not likely to be much liberation from the systemic patterns of an addictive society. Each effective philosophy of education and each effective paradigm for effective educational leadership will deal with the realities pointed to by these considerations. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
