Many people are diseased, ill, joyless, glum, addicted, codependent, disintegrating, etc. in spite of many "favorable" circumstances which are beyond the wildest and fondest dreams of others who enjoy health, joy, happiness and integrity. Many subjective factors are central to the difference between such lives. The differences may often be found in the preconceptions of the people. Perceptions and experiences are profoundly colored by assumptions, attitudes, beliefs, prejudices and convictions which constitute the paradigm within which people live their lives. The paradigm envelops the individuals and their community of intimate others who interact with them. The individual is a product of and producer of the community when embodies the paradigm within which they live lives of integrity or disintegration. The identification of the essential elements of a healthy paradigm (in contrast to the tragic elements of a diseased paradigm) is not easy for people who are trapped within a diseased paradigm. Even addiction to respected objectivity can blind people to the perception of the essential elements of each. The preconceptions of those who are imprisoned in a paradigm can blind them to the tragic nature of the consequences of their preconceptions, beliefs, convictions, and knowledge. It is for these reasons that all people need to reach out to those who are not trapped in their own paradigm for insights which are not constrained by their own paradigm. Only through dialogue with those outside a paradigm can people trapped within a tragic paradigm hope to escape their prison. Such efforts will be difficult because those people who are most free of the entrapping paradigm are likely to be perceived as the enemy of all that is "known" to be good, moral, ethical, proper, traditional, acceptable, communicable, and worthy of dialogue. It will be difficult to associate with them and learn from such people. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
