The structure of human relationships depends in part upon what humans believe about themselves and about their relationships. Belief and reality are inter-related in human relationships. Belief can create or repress reality by enabling or repressing various kinds of relationships. Some kinds of realities are more the product of belief than of objective acts. Some kinds of human relationships are made possible by appropriate kinds of beliefs on the part of the participant in the relationships. The structure of human relationships depends upon what humans believe to be real and/or possible, and upon what kinds of relating humans believe to be appropriate. Jack views Jill as a means to advance his career. Jill is pretty, witty and likely to make a good executive's wife. Jack believes it is appropriate for a climber to marry an appropriate female who will advance his career. The kinds of relationships which are possible between Jack and Jill depends upon whether Jill share's Jack' beliefs, and upon the level of integrity and mutuality in their beliefs. The structure of their relationships, will depend upon what they believe themselves to be, and what they believe they may become. The relationship between Jack and Jill will exist within a community. The kind of relationship which they will be able to maintain will depend upon the beliefs of their community, and how they relate to their community. Human relationships are essentially communal in nature. The structure of human relationships depends as much upon the community as upon the participants in the particular human relationship. Can the relationships be open and honest; or is secrecy and deception expected and required? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
