Such prisoners fear to be free of the prison of their dependency upon the other, regarding instead each other as essential to their personal survival. Each is terrified of being incomplete without the other. Addicts typically seek protection from the consequences of their own foolish behavior, and depend upon the services of a codependent for such protection. The protection given within and by a dishonest context undermines both personal and communal integrity. The protection does not help the addict learn how to cope independently, it undermines the possibility of independence and integrative honesty. The codependent typically seeks a sense of significance and a personal meaning which seems unavailable outside of an addictive relationship. Living in the absence of healthy relationships, the codependent knows no where to turn for the meaning and satisfaction which is found in the intense and dishonest processes of an addictive codependent roller coaster ride, with all of its varied stimulations. The codependent desperately needs to be "loved", and knows of no other kind of love than what can be acquired in an addictive relationship, with all its destructive dishonesty. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
