A change in any one of these is likely to lead to a change in one's duties. One's duties depend upon one's context: who, what, where, when, possibilities, resources, opportunities, limitations, etc. It makes no sense to claim that one's duties are unrelated to one's context. By moving toward statements of transcendent ideals and values one may make statements about duties which transcend many particulars of context. Abstract statements regarding values and ideals do not make clear what one's duties are in a particular context without the addition of a theory of causes and effects in reflexive human relationships. Differing commitments regarding transcendent values and ideals lead to different duties even in the light of a generally agreed to theory of causes and effects, if such an agreement be possible. Differing conceptions regarding the connections among causes and effects lead to differing duties even in the face of generally agreed to values and ideals, if such an agreement exists. One's values and ideals give a sense of the general goal, and the direction in which to move to reach that goal. One's theory of causes and effects relating to reflexive human relationships leads to a set of concepts about how to make progress toward the goal. One's context determines how such concepts about how to make progress toward the goal will be expressed in decisions and actions. One's context determines how one's concepts pertain to one's self in seeking to fulfill one's ideals and values in keeping with one's understanding of causes and effects in reflexive human relationships. Objective considerations do play a role within the context of one's theory of causes and effects in reflexive human relationships. Yet, objective considerations by themselves are inadequate to show the way to achieve any appropriate human goal, because most of the decisions and behaviors entailed in achieving appropriate human goals are non-objective in nature, they are essentially reflexive. Many goals cannot be achieved as the result of planned technical efforts. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
