We may fear an anticipated objective event which would not be to our liking, and such fear may motivate us to take steps to prevent the event from occurring. Such fear is prudent. We may fear what we expect other people are likely to do, and such fear may motivate us to take steps to "control" them to make non-objective choices which will keep what we fear from happening. Neither we nor others behave objectively in such instances. Such fear is imprudent. In particular, we may fear that others will personally reject us, and such fear may motivate us to work to avoid their doing violence to our communal integrity; i.e., cutting us off from community and themselves off from communication with us; thus cutting us off from communication and unity with them. Thus we fear the disintegration of communication, community and unity. The prudent first kind of fear leads to behavior which often promotes integrity. The imprudent second kind of fear leads to behavior which often promotes disintegration. It is foolish to try to be free of the prudent first kind of fear. It is essential that we learn how to become free of the imprudent second kind of fear. People who are committed to promoting both personal and communal integrity succeed to the extent to which they become free of fear of the imprudent second kind, and so become able to direct fear of the prudent first kind as effectively and cooperatively as possible. People who irrationally experience fear of the imprudent second kind may not be able to distinguish between the two kinds of fear, being unable to distinguish between objective and reflexive realities. People who deal exclusively with objective realities are unable to distinguish between objective and reflexive realities, and tend to promote fear of the imprudent second kind in people who deal exclusively with objective realities due to their fears of involvements in reflexive relationships. They are often defensive and insecure, in spite of high levels of intellectual sophistication. Their defensive technologies often heighten disintegrative insecurity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
