If intimacy is forbidden in vague ways according to informal and tacit rules, then people may fear to be open and honest in dialogue, and be cautious in ways that lead to alienation and to the disintegration of the community which forbade indiscreet intimacy. Rules that try to control some behavior with little regard for the significance of and motivation toward the behavior, can undermine the possibility of people engaging in meaningful intimate behavior---limiting people instead to traditional formal patterns of overt behavior which conform to approved scripts, but which do not fulfill human desires or possibilities. Creativity is stifled by efforts to control human behavior without regard to its significance or motivations. Literal behaviorists thus can not promote creativity. Confusion regarding rules of acceptability and excommunication helps to promote caution and conformity. In the face of confusion it is easy to assume guilt, and hard to defend against prejudicial judgments. If rules are clear and explicit it is easy to argue against them and to prove innocence. People who want to promote conformity thus choose not to be clear about rules pertaining to acceptability and excommunication. Such lack of clarity helps to promote caution and alienation, making it easier to control people in keeping with the ideals of conformal leaders. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
