Reflection is upon self and others, regarding self and others; reflexive, not objective, in violation of scientists' objective values, ideals and priorities. Scientists who are exclusively dedicated to objective ideals, values and priorities can not with integrity articulate their own values, ideals, and priorities. They can not be engaged in open and honest dialogue to analyze their own values, ideals and priorities. They can not be scientific about being scientists. It is nearly impossible to escape from a prison which self helped to create, helped to lock self into, and helped to throw the keys of escape away from. Self referential ideals which are highly successful and prohibit their own appraisal, form a prison from which higher education will not be liberated so long as the professors of higher education are the high priests of the imprisoning ideals. The prison is especially secure if the professors of liberal education are taught by the high priests of the imprisoning ideals which block their own appraisal. People who are being true to their highest ideals often undermine liberal education in the name of the ideal of maintaining exclusive objectivity to minimize reflexive bias. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
