Given a particular kind of ideology its incarnations have certain kinds of technical difficulties in fulfilling the visions inherent in the ideology. Many difficulties which appear to be inherently technical, matters of technique, are more realistically perceived to be inherent in the lack of integrity in the ideology; ideological difficulties and ideological incoherence. An incoherent ideology cannot lead to a coherent technology. Defensive people can not achieve security without vulnerability. Vulnerability is an essential component in real security, for without intimacy (which entails vulnerability) there is no security. People who believe in an ideology which rejects these realities can not enjoy security through the mounting of sophisticated defensive technologies. The more sophisticated are the technological difficulties of a culture, the more the members of the society need to become liberated from the misleading ideologies which led them into technical difficulties in seeking to fulfill the visions inherent in the ideology. Technocratic societies are likely to focus most of their members' attentions upon technical components and how the parts of the "machine" relate to each other. To enjoy true security they need to focus more of their attention upon the nature of, and inter-relationships among, the ideals and values which motivate and lead the members of the societies. Incoherent ideals and values lead to cultural disintegration and to inter-cultural conflict and violence. Violent conflicts are not moderated by creating more sophisticated weapons of violence which are capable of higher levels of destruction and faster destruction. Violent conflicts are moderated by participants in the conflicts learning to understand each other's values and ideals and how they can become inter-related and complementary for all. As our technocratic world achieves the capacity for total global self destruction these considerations assume global importance in ways which have previously been inconceivable. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
