It is thus meaningless for behaviorists to share their experiences of what it is like to be a behaviorist. Dialogue about subjective states of consciousness is absurd to a behaviorist that takes self's attitudes and beliefs seriously. Is self to regard one's own belief's and attitudes as worthy of attention; or is only one's own behavior worthy of one's own attention. Are reflexive observations about one's own self worthy of one's own time and attention? Is it meaningful to be "in touch" with one's own feelings, emotions, beliefs; or, should one ignore them in favor of watching only one's own behavior and interpreting its meaning objectively? Are intentions and ideals real? If they are not, is it possible to make a mistake? How can one make a mistake in attempting to fulfill one's own intentions and ideals if they are not real, worthy of attention? What that is real can intimate friends share if only behavior is meaningful? What is a meaningful focus of dialogue if it is taboo to share subjective states of consciousness? Is the taboo to avoid sharing subjective states of consciousness real; it is objective behavior? If the taboo is effective there is no objective behavior in violation of the taboo. What behavior then is the manifestation of the taboo? Is the absence of behavior a form of behavior? How is absence of behavior to be given meaning? If taboos are not real why do so many people behave as if they were real? Does the behavior of being reluctant to share intimate personal experiences mean anything? To what reality does the absence of such dialogue point? In what sense is it an absence apart from the sense that it does not fulfill a common human longing for connectedness. Is such longing real? Does it violate some taboo? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
