It is not even accurate to say that they infant is self- conscious in the sense of being conscious of a separate self which is regarded as such by the infant. The infant has little in the way of a well defined identity or self conception. The infant is conceived by another and others, is responsive to others, and calls for attention by others. The infant, however, has a low level of development of any personal self consciousness. The adolescent may have a high level of development of self consciousness, yet be entirely self centered. All consciousness is focused upon "self" in that case, and upon others only as a means of satisfying "self". Such self centeredness is not a high level of self- consciousness. A higher level of self consciousness depends upon self being interdependent and interconnected with others in mutually satisfying ways, in ways which promote the personal and communal integrity of all persons involved in relationships with the self. Self consciousness of this kind is not distinctively different from communal self consciousness. The highest level of such self consciousness does not entail a conflict between the needs of the self and the needs of the community. Conflict points to the existence of lower levels of self consciousness which define disintegrative ideals as worthy of ultimate concern and commitment. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
