Because he desires that she desire something, she responds by desiring what he desires her to desire. Jack does not respond to Jill by reflecting her desires. Jack is masculine, and reflecting Jill's desires would not be masculine. It is feminine for Jill to reflect Jack's desires. The relationship between Jack and Jill is thus not mutual. Jill has duties which Jack does not have, and Jack has privileges which Jill does not have; and Jill has resentments which Jack does not have. Jane our of resentment does not reflect John's desires. John out of tradition and resentment does not reflect Jane's desires. Their relationship is mutual but unsatisfying. Symmetry is not the essence of a mutually satisfying relationship. Fulfillment of a responsibility to reflect desires is not the essence of a mutually satisfying relationship, not even if it is symmetric. To lead to fulfillment the reflection of desires must be authentic, spontaneous and symmetric; and probably not systematic. The enjoyment of a mutually satisfying relationship is not achieved through technical rules and procedures. If Jack and Jill are complimentary people they have the possibility of developing a mutually satisfying mutual relationship. What develops depends upon their desires, choices, actions and responses; and those of their friends, acquaintances, relatives and superiors. Mutually satisfying relationships are communal affairs which depend upon supportive communal responses for encouragement. Affairs which are devoid of supportive communal responses ultimately lack courage and fulfillment. Creative people develop mutually satisfying relationships with integrity but without universal supportive communal responses, and even in spite of negatively critical communal responses. They help their community transcend its taboos and collusions, and thereby promote personal and communal integrity. They help others become more reflective by their courageous example, becoming role models for others to respect and follow. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
