He knows intuitively what kind of person he can be with integrity, what it would be like to be true to himself. Jack senses that at present he is not being fully himself. Jack experiences cognitive dissonance because of the difference between his behavior and his sense of what it would be like were he most truly himself. Jill has a communal sense of who she is. She knows through her social senses what kind of woman her community expects her to be, what it would be like for her to be true to her communal expectations. She senses that at present she is not being fully her communal self. Jill experiences cognitive dissonance because of the difference between who she is and her sense of what it would be like were she most fully incorporated as a respected member of her community. Jack and Jill sense cognitive dissonances of two kinds. To be true to one's own community. To minimize one dissonance may involve increasing the other. How one seeks to minimize one dissonance will involve the nature and extent of the other dissonance. Each dissonance impinges upon the other. The personal and communal integrity of Jack, Jill and their community depends upon how they resolve their cognitive dissonances while being fully true to each other as they can discover how to be. Disintegrative conceptions of how to be true to self and/or the community can occasion conflict between the need to be true to self and the need to be true to one's own community which conceived one's own self. Creative conceptions of how the community might better be true to the potentials of its members can occasion similar conflicts and cognitive dissonance. Whether or not the community integrates or disintegrates depends upon the manner in which the community and its members deal with such conflicts and dissonances. A community can not have unity if it is not true to the creative potentials of its members. Members of a community can not fulfill their creative potentials while undermining their own need for community understanding and support by doing violence to the integrity of the community. Personal and communal integrity depend upon each other. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
