Now she is taking physics in her university. She is finding the experience a bit strange. There are no women professors in the department with whom to identify. The male professors do not seem to show any favoritism towards males as compared to females; it is just that they do not give any students positive feed-back. Males seem to learn how to get along without positive feed-back more easily than do females. Females have been taught to need positive feed-back more than have males. Thus the absence of positive feed-back towards any students discourages females more than it does males. The males who become physicists and physics professors are the ones who did not seem to need positive feed-back from their teachers. Jill had planned on becoming a physicist and physics teacher. She likes the subject matter and the challenge of physics. She is bright enough to learn physics. But she asks with great feeling now "Who would want to become like those guys? They aren't the kind of people I want to become, and I can't be around the likes of them very much without becoming them!" Jill can't respect physics teaching because physicists have come to teach it in ways which make it deadly to all but a very narrow fraction of all students. She can't see herself teaching in that way and can't see herself having the strength to swim against the tide successfully to make any difference. She doesn't want to be a martyr in a futile effort to make a difference. No statistical analysis of quantitative data will disclose the dynamics of Jill's decision to avoid further physics courses. In the absence of such statistical analysis physicists will not believe that the process which is leading to Jill and others like her to avoid physics is the kind of process which it is. The problem which physicists have and which cause Jill the problem she has with physicists is a problem which by its nature blinds physicists to perceiving it clearly and blocks Jill from making any significant contribution to resolving the problem.
