The house-wife who spends four hours each day cleaning to keep her house perfectly clean affirms the importance to her of an immaculate house as compared to the other ways she could spend her time. The business executive who develops a pattern of working late every day affirms the lack of importance of personal social life as compared to expanding business affairs. The scientist who works long hours to perfect weapons with which to incinerate millions of people affirms the importance of manipulative techniques as compared to intimate personal involvements. Some affirmations need not be made in exclusive ways. We can affirm a friendship with one friend without having to deny friendships with complementary friends. We can affirm the importance of thrift and saving without having to keep all the money we get. We can agree that two plus two equals four without denying that three plus three equals six. Yet, without needing to we all to often feel that to affirm one ideal we must deny some other ideal. Some people affirm their faithfulness to their spouse by having no other friends of the same sex as their spouse. Many affirm their patriotism by regarding all other nations with suspicion. Religious zealots may affirm their faith by denying the truth of scientists discoveries. Scientific zealots may affirm the reliability of their discoveries by denying the meaning of religious insights. We should look with doubt upon ideals which are affirmed by compensating denials. Why is compensation needed? Why is it not adequate to affirm the ideals in a positive way? What value is there in the ideal if it can be affirmed most forcefully by tearing other ideals down? Tearing other ideals down leads to alienation, estrangement, and misunderstanding which blocks appreciation of the ideals which might better have been affirmed in positive ways. It is counter-productive to serve ideals in ways which lead to alienation, estrangement and misunderstanding. No worthy ideals can be furthered in such ways. Proposed ideals can be judged on this basis. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
