Many tragedies flow from failing to make important
distinctions, noticing the differences between different
situations, realities, opportunities, etc. Natural laws
are descriptions of how natural processes occur. The
two are quite different. Failing to notice the difference
can make a tragic difference.
Natural objects are not punished by God for failing
to follow the natural laws which describe how natural
objects always behave. The natural laws flow from how
natural objects always behave. Natural objects never
disobey natural laws and there is no punishment for
failing to obey natural laws. God is not a police-
man/judge. It is tragic to treat human laws as some kind
of mirror image of natural laws.
Human laws do not flow from formulating
descriptions of how humans actually behave. The DO
NOT flow from formulating descriptions of how humans
actually behave. They flow from articulating desires of
people regarding how they wish that humans would behave.
That is quite different.
Prescriptive law, prohibitions and laying on of
responsibilities are in fact threats to punish if certain
circumstances are not met. In a less formal way
traditions, collusions and taboos are threats to punish
for failure to conform to prescribed expectations of a
positive or negative nature. Such human threats are not
like natural laws which describe natural un-contrived
processes. The threats involve human decisions, choices,
ideals and values. The threats are not objective facts
beyond human choice.
Human laws play a useful role in regulating human
behavior. Tragically, however, they are often used in the
name of community---in ways which undermine the unity of
a community by violating the integrity of persons and
the community. When laws are used as the excuse for
rejecting people, for excommunicating them, such use of
laws breaks down the communications which unify the
community. Alienated members of a community undermine the
unity of the community. When a community alienates
members of the community it alienates also those nearest
and dearest to the alienated members of the community.
The rejection of one person leads to the alienation not
only of the one rejected, but also of those nearest
and dearest to the rejected one.
Humans often mistakenly think they are doing God =
Love's work in rejecting others. There is quite a
difference between their alienative work and God's work of
Love.
