It may be helpful to understand our own behavior in terms of our responses to other people's behavior, rather than in terms of our responses to what they have said to or about us. Humans are gregarious. Humans fear rejection, loss of community. Humans fear alienation which flows from rejection. Thus, humans behave in ways to try to avoid the alienation of rejection. We feel compelled to do what it takes to avoid rejection and alienation. We are driven to do according to our fears of rejection if we do not do. We are driven to not do according to our fears of rejection if we do do. We may be under the tension of a conflict of conflicting fears about doing and not doing the same things. Other people's behaviors may have instructed us on the one hand to do some act. Yet other people's behaviors may have instructed us on the other hand to do the same act as a rebellion against those who command that we do it. Both sets of other people threaten to reject us; on the one hand for doing what is forbidden, on the other hand for failing to rebel against the taboo as a symbol of solidarity with the rebels. We fear rejection on both counts and are under internalized conflict. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
